#BrainFactMonday – What Do Balance and Resilience Mean?

What keeps you alive in normal and challenging conditions? Balance and resilience.

So in this #BrainFactMonday we explore the behind-the-scenes of these two vital aspects of our lives so that you have better control of your behaviour, life and career.

There are two body functions you need to be aware of, both regulated by your brain 🧠:

📌𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗶𝘀 is the body's ability to maintain a 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 despite external changes, allowing cells and organs to function optimally. It regulates body temperature, blood pressure, blood glucose levels and so on (that's why when it's too hot, you sweat to cool down and when it's too cold, you shiver to generate heat). It keeps you 𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗱.

📌𝗔𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘀𝗶𝘀 is the body's adaptive 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘂𝗻𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀. It prepares you for future challenges by adjusting physiological set points in advance (that's why when you're about to give a presentation your heart rate and breathing increase slightly beforehand to prepare for the upcoming challenge). It makes you 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝘁.

So now, how do you ensure they will work optimally?

👉 𝗥𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿 𝗘𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲: staying active is the simplest way to support homeostasis and prime your body for challenges.

👉 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗘𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴: nourish your body with a balanced diet to fuel homeostasis and ensure you're ready for whatever comes your way.

👉 𝗤𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗦𝗹𝗲𝗲𝗽: your body recovers during sleep so prioritizing rest is vital for optimal homeostasis.

👉 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗶𝗾𝘂𝗲𝘀: whether it's meditation, deep breathing, or a hobby you enjoy, find what helps you manage stress because it's key for allostasis and staying resilient.

So... there is nothing new under the sun here, yet understanding "why" you should do all this will increase your motivation to build and maintain healthy habits. And the "why" here is your natural body's ability to keep you balanced and resilient.
