#BrainFactMonday – What Happens In The Brain of Brave People? How Can You Leverage Those Mechanisms?

Posted on 16th October 2023

Why do some people seem to embrace risks effortlessly while others hesitate? And if you're risk-averse, how can you leverage your brain to take bolder steps? This #BrainFactMonday helps you do just that! 🧠✨

The brain of a brave person, in fact, differs in several key ways from someone who tends to shy away from risks. Here's a simplified breakdown:

🧠𝗡𝗲𝘂𝗿𝗼𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗺𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀:
𝗕𝗿𝗮𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹𝘀 may have a more sensitive dopamine response, seeking excitement and rewards from challenging situations.
𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂'𝗿𝗲 𝗿𝗶𝘀𝗸-𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗲, boosting serotonin levels might help you reduce excessive caution and promote a balanced approach.

🧠𝗔𝗺𝘆𝗴𝗱𝗮𝗹𝗮 𝗜𝗻𝗳𝗹𝘂𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲: the amygdala, responsible for processing emotions like fear, can be more active in cautious individuals, while the fearless may exhibit reduced fear responses. Mindfulness practices can help you manage fear and anxiety, encouraging calculated risk-taking.

🧠𝗣𝗿𝗲𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿: the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) plays a role in decision-making and risk assessment. You can enhance its function through regular problem-solving exercises, empowering you to make more confident choices.

💡 But what if you find yourself in the risk-averse camp?
Here's how you can leverage these brain mechanisms to take calculated risks:

1️⃣ 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝘀𝗺𝗮𝗹𝗹: begin with low-stakes challenges that push your boundaries slightly. Gradually build up your confidence by stepping out of your comfort zone in manageable ways.

2️⃣ 𝗩𝗶𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀: train your brain to focus on positive outcomes. Visualization techniques can rewire your thinking, making it easier to embrace uncertainty.

3️⃣ 𝗦𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁: surround yourself with encouraging and supportive individuals who can inspire you to take that leap of faith.

4️⃣ 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝘀𝗲𝘁𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀: failure is a necessary stepping stone to success. Embrace setbacks as learning opportunities and use them to fuel your growth.

💪 As you can see, courage isn't an elusive trait reserved for a select few (I'm actually grateful to be one of them anyway!); it's a skill that you can nurture and cultivate through understanding your brain's intricacies.

So keep reading my #BrainFactMonday to learn more about leveraging your brain mechanisms and expanding your life and career opportunities!🌱✨
