#BrainFactMonday – Why you need to communicate in a style that is fair.
Posted on 31st January 2024

Here's why, when you communicate, you need to ensure that both the tone of the conversation AND the content are perceived as FAIR by the counterpart (or the audience).
As you might well know by now (after more than a year's worth of #BrainFactMonday 🧠) the human brain is wired to 𝗱𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘀, and surely "injustice" feels threatening.
When a conversation lacks fairness, the interlocutor's brain may trigger emotional responses such as frustration, anger, or distrust, no matter how genuine your intentions are.
By perceiving what's being said as unfair (therefore a potential threat ☠️), their emotional reaction will impair their ability to understand, learn and collaborate.
𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗿𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (again, tone and content) promotes a positive emotional response that enhances the other person's ability to understand, learn, cooperate and respond.
You have many more chances to bring back home a good result when they are in that state. 📈Increase your chances by leveraging how the brain works and always ensure you communicate in fair terms and concepts.
If you don't know how to do so, just ask them. Don't shy away from questions such as "does this feel fair to you/what would make this feel fairer to you?" and so on.
After all, there's nothing that feels fairer than being involved in how the conversation is being handled!Does this resonate with you?
